Soldier refusing their salary

The Black Union soldiers refused their salary for eighteen months because they were protesting being paid less than the white soldiers.  They were paid ten dollars a month, where white soldiers were being paid 13 or more depending on their rank.  The highest paid Black soldier was paid the what the lowest white soldier was getting  paid.  With a mix of help from abolitionist congressmen and the refusal of the wages on September of 1864, black soldiers finally received equal pay.  With this change, most of the Black soldiers had money to send back to their families.
